Sight loss: grants and benefits

As a visually impaired person in the UK, you may have access to certain state benefits and grants. Here is a list of websites which can help you find out how to claim what might be available to you.

BlindAid - Grants. You may be eligible for a grant award if you have a visual impairment and could use the funds to reduce your isolation.

Citizens Advice - Benefits. This organisation offers benefits advice if you live anywhere in England.

DeafblindUK - Benefits and entitlements. Find out what benefits are available if you have a combination of sight and hearing loss.

Disability Grants - Grants for the blind and visually impaired. This Website offers a number of links to charities and organisations that offer grants and bursaries for a variety of individual needs. It’s worth taking a look and checking whether any of them apply to you. 

Disability Rights UK - What you can claim. An extensive list of links is included here, along with a page with more links for what to do if you have a Disability or long term health condition.

GOV.UK. If you’re living with sight loss, this site has several financial resources for you. For instance, you might be entitled to Help if you're a student with a disability to cover some of your financial obligations. There are also Disabled Facilities Grants if you need to make changes to your home. Travel is another area where assistance is offered, so head over to the Transport if you're disabled portion of the site to find out what is free or subsidised.

Macular Society - Your rights. This organisation has a very helpful explanation of what it means to register as someone who has a sight impairment.

NHS - How do I register as disabled? Get information on registering as blind or partially sighted as well as signing up for other benefits.

NIDirect - Independence at home. This page explains the various services available if you live in Northern Ireland.

PeopleFirst - Disability benefits. Designed to support London residents, PeopleFirst has information if you are looking for general information about benefits.

RNIB - Benefits calculator. This accessible online tool will create a customised report of benefits based on the information you provide.

RNIB - Grants from other organizations. Find out what external organisations are recommend by the RNIB if you seek additional resources for grants and benefits.

Scottish War Blinded - Financial assistance. This page offers links to help you if you are a Scottish war veteran with sight loss.

Sight Cymru - Support services. This site explains the various services available if you have sight loss and live in Wales.

Turn2Us - Search for grants. This online tool can help you uncover grants or other types of assistance.
